Kenya's Communications Authority Proposes DNA and Biometrics for SIM Registrations.

The Communications Authority of Kenya has gazetted draft regulations on October 30 requiring new SIM card users to provide DNA profiles, blood types, iris scans, and other biometrics starting January 1, 2026, in addition to national ID verification. Existing subscribers must update their details by March 31, 2026, or face deactivation, with telecom operators required to store the data securely and allow quarterly access by the authority to combat SIM-swap fraud and anonymous crimes. Privacy advocates and social media users express concerns over surveillance risks and data security, particularly after recent government hacks, as public consultations continue until January 31, 2026.
