Plane Carrying Minister, 19 Others Crashes, Bursts into Flames at Kolwezi Airport

On November 17, 2025, an Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft carrying Democratic Republic of Congo's Mines Minister Louis Watum Kabamba and approximately 19 others crash-landed at Kolwezi Airport in Lualaba province. The plane, which had departed from Kinshasa, skidded off the runway during landing around 11 a.m. local time and subsequently burst into flames. All passengers and crew were evacuated safely before the fire fully engulfed the aircraft, with no reported injuries, though luggage was destroyed. The minister was en route to inspect the site of a recent mine collapse in the region that had killed at least 32 people. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. Videos circulating on social media show the plane veering off the runway, emitting thick smoke, and catching fire shortly after.
