China Pumps $54 Billion into Major Banks and Insurers

On Sunday, the Ministry of Finance announced about 360 billion yuan ($54 billion) in fresh capital for eight key state-owned institutions, including Agricultural Bank of China raising up to 160 billion yuan and Industrial and Commercial Bank targeting 100 billion yuan through private share placements. China Life Insurance gets 35 billion yuan, with smaller sums for other insurers like China Taiping and People's Insurance Company of China.

The move aims to strengthen balance sheets strained by low rates and property woes, boost lending to the real economy, and support stock market stability. Analysts say it expands lending capacity, though economist Michael Pettis notes true system safety comes best from outside capital.
