The Higher Education Loans Board is directing private employers to withhold repayments from defaulting employees' salaries and remit them by the 15th of each month through an online portal. Working with the Kenya Revenue Authority, HELB is notifying companies about staff owing roughly Sh32 billion as of mid-2025, with defaulters now at 380,530. Employees in hardship can negotiate plans directly with HELB, which also offers incentives like an 80% penalty waiver for lump-sum payments to encourage compliance.
