Senate Advances Resolution Limiting U.S. Military Action in Venezuela

The U.S. Senate passed a 52-47 procedural vote to advance S.J. Res. 98, requiring congressional approval for any further military action in Venezuela under the 1973 War Powers Resolution. All Democrats joined five Republicans—Sens. Susan Collins, Josh Hawley, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, and Todd Young—in support, clearing the way for debate next week. The measure targets future escalations after the Jan. 3 operation that nabbed Maduro and his wife on narcoterrorism charges, sparking Trump's veto threat and a clash over constitutional authority between Congress and the commander-in-chief.
