UEFA Taps Somali Referee Artan for 2026 Super Cup Final After U.S. Snub

UEFA appointed 34-year-old Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan to officiate the 2026 Super Cup final between PSG and Aston Villa on August 12 at Salzburg's Red Bull Arena.

The move follows Artan's denial of entry to the U.S. for the FIFA World Cup 2026 due to vetting concerns cited by Customs and Border Protection, which a Trump official linked to alleged terror associations that Artan denies.

As CAF's 2025 men's referee of the year and the first Somali to handle a continental final, Artan earned praise from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin for his skills, with the appointment tied to a new UEFA-CAF memorandum promoting unity and equality.
