Sgt. Michael Swinton Killed in Drone Detonation at Erbil Air Base

The 30-year-old soldier from Fayetteville, North Carolina, assigned to the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Fort Bragg, died July 19 during a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone at Erbil Air Base in Iraq.

He leaves behind wife Mia Gonzalez-Swinton, a 6-year-old son, and their daughter; Swinton will receive a posthumous promotion to staff sergeant plus the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge.

His loss follows the deaths of Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Texas, and 1st Lt.

Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Hawaii, from Iranian strikes on a Jordan base July 17-18, amid a conflict started in February 2026 that has killed 17-19 Americans total.

 Gen. Dan Caine honored them in Senate testimony, as President Trump plans a Dover visit and the Pentagon reports nearly 100 recent injuries.
