Douglas Waweru Kamau of the Democracy for Citizens Party won with 35,440 votes
to UDA's Samuel Muchina Nyagah's 5,450, in a by-election for the seat left
vacant by MP David Njuguna Kiaraho's death in March.
The result, seen as a proxy fight between
President Ruto and his impeached former deputy Rigathi Gachagua, sparked sharp
online criticism of current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, with figures like
lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi calling him a political liability.
Mt. Kenya's west—areas like Nyandarua, Nyeri, and Murang'a—shows growing support for Gachagua, while the east remains more aligned with Ruto, raising stakes for the 2027 election where the region's 5 million votes could decide the outcome.
