accused Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of inventing claims that U.S.
negotiators viewed French language protections in Quebec as an irritant,
calling it a desperate bid for political support.
The denial came after trade talks collapsed, with the U.S. imposing 50 percent tariffs on $20-28 billion in Canadian goods like autos and parts, and Canada planning retaliation in early September.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer had already dismissed Carney's assertions as a 'funny, fake story' tied to disputes over streaming rules, leaving the economic ties between the neighbors even more strained.
