Airtel Africa Shuts Down Kenyan Wholesale Fibre Unit After Losses

Airtel Kenya Telesonic, the company's wholesale internet and fibre-optic arm, generated no revenue in 2024 or 2025 and racked up Sh19 million in accumulated losses before surrendering its licence late last year.

The unit faces deregistration by December 2026 as Airtel refocuses on profitable mobile and consumer fibre services, which continue to expand.

The move spotlights the steep costs and fierce competition in Kenya's wholesale market, where high licence fees and lack of undersea cable access proved too much to overcome.
