Gikomba Market Nears Completion in Major Nairobi Upgrade

Kenya's government is transforming Gikomba Market, East Africa's key hub for affordable mitumba clothes, into a modern multi-level facility with secure stalls, better drainage, cold storage, sanitation, and even a fish-processing zone.

Phase 1, offering spaces for up to 7,000 traders plus basement parking and daycare, finishes soon and could open next month after painting and partitioning.

While supporters hail the fix for fires, floods, and poor access, critics worry shoppers won't climb upper floors for quick KSh 400 bargains, potentially leaving higher levels empty.
