New rules from Kenya's Energy and
Petroleum Regulatory Authority, effective retroactively from July 1, 2025,
classify unapproved excess solar exports as 'dumping' and charge them at full
tariffs.
Systems up to 1 MW can join net-metering with approval for 50% credit on surplus, but domestic setups are capped at 4 kW single-phase or 10 kW three-phase.
Engineer John Mativo stresses solar installations are legal, but grid exports need licenses to avoid risks like voltage spikes or hazards to workers. Owners are advised to check inverters for zero-export or apply for net-metering promptly.
