President
William Ruto directed the Kenya Revenue Authority to revert the consolidated cargo
valuation threshold from KSh3.2 million back to KSh2.5 million, a change that
took effect in August after trader protests over higher costs.
He also instructed KRA to list high-value items for separate valuation and ordered Kenya Railways to slash 20-foot container freight charges from KSh75,000 to KSh10,000.
The measures aim to ease burdens on micro, small, and medium enterprises while ensuring proper taxation on luxury goods. Public reactions range from praise for the business relief to criticism that the government created the issue for political gain.
