China
disclosed the test this weekend via Xinhua, marking the Long March anniversary
and noting its third-generation Changzheng nuclear submarines successfully
launched a submarine-launched strategic missile. Beijing called it a routine
training exercise, notified in advance and not targeted at any nation, though
Australia, Japan, and New Zealand criticized the short notice.
The revelation highlights China's advances in sea-based nuclear deterrence and unmanned underwater vehicles, including new motherships for large drones up to 45 meters long. Analysts point to maturing capabilities amid regional undersea competition and questions over transparency.
