Ruto Orders Buffalo and Camel Imports to Tackle Kenya Milk Shortage

At the Agriculture and Food Security Transformation Summit in Nairobi on October 9, President William Ruto directed officials to import buffaloes and improved camel breeds to diversify milk sources amid shortages.

He highlighted India's success with buffalo milking and noted camel milk already fetches KSh190-200 per litre in Nairobi, far above cow milk prices, while camels thrive in dry areas. Despite Kenya's milk output rising to 5.6 billion litres annually as Africa's top producer, formal deliveries dropped and retail prices hit KSh85 per litre in spots due to drought and high feed costs.
