 On December 3, 2025, Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo successfully defended against his third impeachment attempt in the Kenyan Senate, retaining his position after senators upheld a preliminary objection on procedural grounds. This marks another narrow escape for Nyaribo, who has faced repeated ouster efforts from the Nyamira County Assembly since assuming office, with at least one attempt annually.The latest motion, introduced on November 25, 2025, by Bonyamatutu MCA, accused Nyaribo of gross misconduct, including misuse of office, unlawful appointments, abuse of public funds (e.g., irregular payments totaling Sh33.5 million), and violations of the Constitution and County Governments Act. This followed two prior failed attempts: one in October 2023 (defeated 18-16) and another in September 2024 (short by one vote at 22-23).During the December 3 plenary session, Nyaribo's legal team, led by Advocate Elias Mutuma, raised objections arguing that the County Assembly's vote did not meet the constitutional two-thirds threshold. Nyamira's assembly has 35 members, requiring at least 24 votes for validity. Records showed 23 votes in favor, but only 19 MCAs were physically present—alleging invalid proxy votes from absent members like Priscilla Nyatichi, Julius Obonyo, Elijah Abere, and Gladys Moraa, who later disowned their authorizations.In a decisive vote, 38 senators supported upholding the objection, with only 4 opposing. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi declared the motion "invalid and incompetent" under Article 181 of the Constitution and Section 33 of the County Governments Act, terminating the proceedings without a full trial. Kingi announced: "The hearing of proposed removal from office by impeachment of Governor Amos Nyaribo is hereby terminated."Nyaribo becomes the third Kenyan governor in recent months saved by technicalities, following Isiolo's Abdi Guyo and Kericho's Eric Mutai—highlighting ongoing debates over unclear impeachment procedures. Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot noted the need for a dedicated impeachment law to avoid such disputes.
