Kenya Sells 15% Safaricom Stake to Vodafone for $1.6 Billion.

Announced December 3, the transaction sees Kenya offload 6.01 billion Safaricom shares at KSh 34 each, totaling KSh 204.3 billion, plus KSh 40.2 billion for future dividend rights on the remaining stake. This drops government ownership from 35% to 20%, lifts Vodafone Kenya's to 55%, and leaves 25% with public investors. Funds head to infrastructure like energy projects, roads, water, and airports, part of a strategy to unlock cash from state firms. The premium price drew investor optimism alongside questions about parting with a key asset, as Safaricom stays listed and awaits regulatory nods.
