Tanzania's 64th Independence Day Passes in Quiet Under Heavy Security.

Tanzania observed its 64th Independence Day with deserted roads in major cities, as authorities deployed police and military to prevent opposition-led demonstrations against the disputed October 2025 election. 

President Samia Suluhu Hassan won over 97% of the vote amid fraud allegations, a post-election crackdown with hundreds killed and thousands arrested, and canceled official events.

Small clashes occurred in places like Mwanza, but security forces maintained control by midday, while rights groups raised alarms over harassment and arrests.
