PayPal Freezes Kenyan Accounts Over Verification Demands

PayPal has frozen funds and restricted accounts for an unknown number of Kenyan users who couldn't provide proof of employment, bank statements, and utility bills for addresses.

Freelancers, startups, and artists report being unable to send, receive, or withdraw money, with balances held up to 180 days and non-compliant accounts facing permanent closure.

The crackdown ties to global anti-money laundering rules and Kenya's grey list status, leaving many legitimate workers frustrated and seeking alternatives like Wise or Payoneer.
