the U.S. after last-minute terms proved unfair, with midnight 50% U.S. tariffs
set on $28 billion in Canadian goods like wine, dairy, and hockey equipment.
Carney announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation
starting the Tuesday after Labour Day to protect workers, farmers, and
businesses, while highlighting progress toward core goals like tariff-free
access and sovereignty.
The U.S. Trade Representative countered that Canada backed away from an earlier deal amid new demands, as Ontario Premier Doug Ford and others rallied behind a unified response.
Carney pointed to Canada's homegrown strength, including $500 billion in infrastructure and $1.5 trillion in new export deals.
