Early
Saturday, a parcel truck swerved into the opposite lane on the Mwea-Embu
Highway near Murubara village, colliding head-on with a tuk-tuk carrying
workers from Kimbimbi to Mwea Irrigation for rice planting.
Six
passengers died in the tuk-tuk, plus two pedestrians, while the lorry driver
was arrested with minor injuries and three others were hospitalized.
Residents
pointed to potholes as a factor, and the overloaded tuk-tuk lacking doors or
seatbelts drew calls for better safety rules on highways shared with heavy
trucks.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and MP Mary Maingi offered condolences and urged fixes for dangerous roads.
