Traders
from markets like Gikomba and Kamukunji closed businesses Friday to protest a
Kenya Revenue Authority increase in the minimum customs benchmark for cargo
containers, from KSh 2.5 million to KSh 3.2 million effective around August 21.
They say the 28% rise adds about KSh 700,000 per 40-foot container, squeezing small importers' thin margins on goods from China.
KRA calls it a fair update after six years, aimed at curbing undervaluation while offering options like actual value declarations; police used tear gas amid the marches, as figures like MP Babu Owino backed the traders' call for relief.
