Tanzania Vice President Nchimbi Resigns and Retires from Politics

Tanzania's Vice President announced his resignation on August 25, 2026, effective September 4, citing constitutional provisions and a pledge he made to President Samia Suluhu Hassan a year earlier to step aside if needed.

In his letter, he thanked the president, his Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, and Tanzanians for their support during his tenure, which began in November 2025 after diplomatic and party roles.

He assured he'll remain a loyal citizen, paving the way for a successor amid reactions of surprise, praise for his timing, and views of it as principled, following earlier party tension reports.
