Kenya's Public Debt Doubles, Citizens Demand Accountability

Kenya's public debt jumped from Ksh 7.7 trillion in mid-2021 to over Ksh 13 trillion by mid-2026, with debt servicing eating up 69 percent of tax revenue in the 2024/25 year. The 'Wanakopa Tunalipa' campaign, running September 28-29, 2026, organized by Maskani Ya Taifa and partners, calls for transparency on how funds were spent and pushes for better public services like healthcare, education, and water.

Citizens and activists like Shamir Activist emphasize tracking the money to ensure it delivers real benefits, amid a petition urging constitutional debt compliance.
