Kenya's Public Debt Reaches Record Sh13.3 Trillion Under Ruto

Debt climbed from Sh8.76 trillion when Ruto took office to Sh13.01 trillion by June 2026, with domestic debt at Sh7.33 trillion. The government plans Sh39 billion more through a Sports Fund bond for 33 stadium projects, repayable over 15 years from future collections.

While supporters highlight jobs and events like the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, critics question priorities when debt servicing tops Sh1.7 trillion yearly and food security lags.
