M-PESA Outage Hits Kenyans Amid Safaricom's Fraud Fight

Safaricom confirmed the system glitch and got teams on it right away, while users turned to cash for basics like transport.

This came fresh after the company's 2026 Sustainable Business Report showed M-PESA booming with 41.7 million active users processing KShs 41.6 trillion, alongside firing 118 staff for fraud and recovering Sh953 million in shady commissions.

CEO Peter Ndegwa highlighted AI blocking 94 percent of fraud attempts, but the outage spotlighted worries over cyber threats, employee misconduct, and Kenya's dependence on one platform for daily life.
