Kenya's Hospitals Face Cash Crunch and Deadly Shortages

Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya's largest facility, collects up to Sh60 million daily but can't buy lab reagents or painkillers due to a 2023 policy routing funds through the eCitizen platform, delaying Treasury returns.

Nearly 500 patients await tests amid unpaid suppliers halting services like food and dialysis. Broader issues include Social Health Authority debts and antivenom shortages killing about 4,000 yearly, with recent tragedies like pregnant women Lulu Mohamed Hassan and Deborah Wanyama dying after failed transfers between rural hospitals lacking the antidote.
