Kenya Raises Domestic Workers' Minimum Wage to KSh 18,047 in Major Cities

 Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced the increase for house helps, gardeners, and others in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret, following President Ruto's May 1 directive. 

Wages are lower in smaller areas at KSh 16,650 or KSh 9,268, with penalties of jail or fines for non-compliance amid rising 6.7% inflation. 

While many cheer the protection for over two million vulnerable workers, middle-class families worry about affording it, comparing it to intern teachers' KSh 17,000 pay and questioning enforcement in a sector rife with verbal deals.
