No University Degree Needed for Kenya's Top Elective Posts in 2027

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has confirmed that candidates no longer need a university degree to contest for president, governor, or Member of Parliament, following court rulings that struck down the requirement as unconstitutional due to discrimination.

IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu emphasized this change in an interview, noting candidates must still meet basics like citizenship and voter registration.

While some welcome the inclusivity, others worry about leadership standards, and police plan to flag those with histories of political violence as unfit.
