Kenya's
High Court found Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja in contempt for failing
to issue public advisories before erecting roadblocks around Nairobi's Central
Business District on June 25, violating a prior order to protect rights to
movement and assembly.
Kanja apologized sincerely, explained the security context, and committed to future compliance. Justice Patricia Nyaundi pardoned him with a stern warning of possible jail time if it happens again, discharging him while noting his personal appearance and remorse. Some observers voiced frustration, seeing it as leniency for senior officials compared to ordinary citizens.
