Rigathi Gachagua Declares UDA 'Dead' in Fiery Speech Ahead of Mbeere North By-Election

On November 18, 2025, former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made headlines by declaring the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)—the ruling party he once helped lead—"dead" during a campaign rally in Embu County's Mbeere North constituency. Speaking to supporters amid preparations for a by-election in the area, Gachagua used stark metaphorical language, stating, "UDA is dead, because this burial will be big. We want to start very early, and by 8am, we will be done." The remarks appear to symbolize his belief that UDA's influence in the Mt. Kenya region has collapsed, especially following his impeachment in October 2024 and subsequent removal as the party's deputy leader.Gachagua, who was ousted from his position after a Senate vote on charges including gross misconduct and incitement, has been vocal in criticizing President William Ruto's administration and UDA's direction. His latest comments come as he campaigns against UDA candidates in the upcoming by-elections, aligning himself with opposition figures like Martha Karua and urging voters to reject the party. He accused UDA of sending police and goons to disrupt events, claiming, "Everyone has already left UDA," and framing the by-election as a referendum on the party's viability in the region.UDA swiftly responded with a strongly worded letter, dismissing Gachagua's statements as "baseless propaganda" and accusing him of inciting chaos while demanding accountability for alleged stolen funds. The party emphasized that his claims "collapse under scrutiny" and urged him to cease divisive rhetoric in Mbeere North. This exchange has intensified political tensions, with some speculating about UDA's potential rebranding or mergers amid declining support in key areas.Additionally, unrelated to the "UDA is dead" declaration, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku denied Gachagua's claims that he had visited Ruku's grandmother's home in Mbeere, calling it "pure lies" and clarifying he has no living grandmother. False rumors and doctored videos about Gachagua's death have also circulated online, but he remains active in politics.

Gachagua's bold statement has sparked widespread discussion on social media, reflecting deeper rifts within Kenya's ruling coalition as the country approaches more electoral tests.
