Montana Senator Tim
Sheehy unveiled the Judicial Accountability for Irresponsible Leniency Act on
November 20.
The bill would allow
victims or their families to sue judges and agencies in federal court for
damages if they release violent repeat offenders without bail and those
individuals harm others again.
It overrides judicial
immunity as a defense and targets those with prior violent convictions.
Sheehy linked the
proposal to cases like Zarutska's, amid concerns over lenient practices, though
some worry it could undermine judicial independence.
