Kenyan Court Halts U.S. Ebola Quarantine Plan at Air Base

Justice Patricia Nyaundi issued orders Friday barring Kenyan authorities from facilitating a 50-bed U.S. Ebola quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base, following a petition by rights group Katiba Institute amid public backlash. The plan addressed an ongoing outbreak in eastern DRC and Uganda, with over 1,000 suspected cases and 240 deaths reported by WHO as of May 30—no cases in Kenya. Locals, led by Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu, decried health risks, while U.S. officials pledged $13.5 million for preparedness; the order holds until a June 2 hearing.
