The Kenya National Highways Authority confirmed a Ksh 8 per kilometer toll for passenger cars on the soon-to-open Rironi-Mau Summit dual carriageway, part of the A8 highway from near Nairobi through Naivasha and Nakuru.
Built via a 30-year public-private
partnership with China Road and Bridge Corporation and the National Social
Security Fund, the project promises shorter travel times—like Nairobi to Nakuru
in two hours instead of three—and fewer accidents.
While supporters praise the time savings and safety upgrades, many drivers decry it as double taxation, with critics warning of rising bus fares, food prices, and regional inequities, alongside demands for contract transparency.
