Madagascar Celebrates 66th Independence Day Amid Cyclone Recovery

Today marks Madagascar's 66th Independence Day on June 26, commemorating freedom from France in 1960 with military parades, traditional dances, fireworks, and family feasts centered in the capital.

The festivities follow devastating cyclones Fytia and Gezani earlier this year, which killed dozens, displaced thousands, and caused over $2 billion in damage across the east.

President Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who took office after 2025 protests, receives global greetings from leaders like Kenya's William Ruto and India's S. Jaishankar, who airlifted 30 tonnes of aid, as the island reflects on its unique biodiversity and vanilla heritage.
