Kenya Launches Green Plates for Electric Vehicles Nationwide

Kenya's new National e-Mobility Policy introduces reflective green number plates for all electric vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, and buses, effective immediately across the country. Unveiled in Nairobi by Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir on behalf of President William Ruto, the plates aim to cut carbon emissions and fossil fuel imports while meeting a 32% greenhouse gas reduction goal by 2030. EV registrations jumped from 796 in 2022 to 24,754 last year, boosted by incentives like zero-rated VAT on electric buses and batteries, alongside plans for local manufacturing and charging stations. Officials hail it as a sustainable milestone, though some question power reliability and call for more support.
