Kenya's Taxpayers Face Sh2.31 Trillion Debt Burden in 2026/27

The National Assembly's Public Debt and Privatisation Committee reports that debt service will consume 90% of Consolidated Fund Services in the Sh4.78 trillion 2026/27 budget, with Sh1.25 trillion for interest and Sh1.06 trillion for principal.

Interest payments alone hit 6% of GDP, exceeding planned development spending at 3.6%, while public debt is forecast to reach Sh14.12 trillion by June 2027 and exceeds the 55% statutory limit.

Committee chair Abdi Shurie calls for better cash management and debt restructuring to ease the strain, as costs are set to triple by 2029/30.
