Ruto Aide Suggests Shutting School Canteens to Stop Arson Fires

Kibet, a key aide to President William Ruto, argued that canteens sell matches used in recent school fires, like the deadly blaze at Utumishi Girls Academy on May 28 that killed 16 students.

Over 50 schools have closed since late May due to fires and unrest linked to exam stress, poor food, overcrowding, and harsh discipline—not canteen sales, say officials and critics.

Mockery poured in, with many questioning Kibet's grasp of school life and calling for fixes to real issues like student welfare and fire safety.
