Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin
Jassim Al Thani, Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister, called top
diplomats from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Oman, and the UAE on Thursday to
condemn recent strikes on three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a
vital route for 20% of global oil.
The attacks, including one on
Qatar's Al Rukayyat tanker and a Saudi supertanker, violated a June truce
between the US and Iran that had reopened the strait after months of blockade.
Qatar urged dialogue, compliance with the US-Iran memorandum, and restraint, positioning itself as a mediator while the US struck Iranian targets and oil prices surged.
