U.S. Accuses Chinese AI Firms of Stealing Tech from Top Models

A joint advisory from the NSA, CISA, and FBI on September 8 named six Chinese firms—DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z.AI—for running massive campaigns to extract capabilities from U.S. models like Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok since late 2024.

Officials called it aggressive theft at industrial scale, likely known to the Chinese government, using proxies and multiple accounts to dodge detection and skip the huge costs of original research.

The warning urges U.S. AI companies to watch for suspicious patterns, while CIA Deputy Director Michael Ellis said America is ramping up spying on Chinese tech firms in AI and beyond, ahead of a Trump-Xi meeting.
