Kenya Plans Equal 12-Week School Terms from 2027 to Curb Unrest

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced Tuesday that starting in 2027, all school terms will last 12 weeks each, balancing the current uneven calendar of 12, 14, and nine weeks to reduce fatigue linked to recent unrest in boarding schools.

The changes follow disturbances in 204 senior secondary institutions, including arson and strikes tied to exam stress, poor conditions, and grueling routines, though over 98% of schools remain stable.

Ogamba stressed no disruptions to the current term, urged parents to talk openly during the upcoming break, and outlined steps like counseling boosts and safety audits to prevent future issues.
